The Karen Street Quartet tells "Another Story"

Few accordianists have made their mark in Jazz, so Karen Street is a member of a rare breed. Playing songs from her latest CD "Another Story", she continues to skilfully challenge some people's preconceptions of the accordian.

A striking partnership with guitarist Fred T Baker is refreshed by the addition of award winning singer Sara Colman, along with the talented bassist Andy Hamill.  "Another Story" features jazz standards, original tunes - and pop songs - demonstrating the accordian's impressive versatility.

Karen's skill as an accordianist, saxophonist and composer ensures she is in demand for a range of projects: from Ute Lemper and Willard White; Grace Jones and Martha Wainwright; to the Mike Westbrook Orchestra  and the BBC Philharmonic.

"Street ... should be ranked among top accordianists anywhere."
(Ronald Atkins - Jazz Review)

The Big Chris Barber Band

Saturday 20 March 7.30pm

“If you are looking for the ‘Godfather of British Blues’, the Capo Di Capo, the man who made it all happen, then look no further than Chris Barber” Blues In Britain

The man is a legend. Celebrating 60 years as the great British trombonist and bandleader with over 10,000 concerts, Chris Barber has been a prodigy of the jazz world since the early 1950s and ‘can’t stop now’!

From his roots in New Orleans to the early music of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, Chris Barber leads his fabulous 11-piece band in a concert of superb traditional jazz and blues together with swing and ragtime in classics like Bourbon Street Parade, Black and Tan Fantasy, Big Noise from Winnetka - and probably When the Saints!

With Lonnie Donegan, Chris Barber set the scene for skiffle in the 50s. He collaborated with the world’s finest musicians and introduced legendary American blues players like Muddy Waters to Britain. A generation of musicians including Mark Knopfler, Eric Burdon, The Stones, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison have all been influenced by him.

This concert promises a superb, highly memorable evening in the magnificent Bradenstoke Hall in St Donats Castle. Chris Barber still plays with huge energy, unpretentious warmth and historic depth - and he comes out and chats before and after the concert and during the interval. Don’t miss this storming evening!

“Chris Barber is a hero of Jazz and Blues” Van Morrison

“The Reading Festival, The Marquee Club, the dawn of British Blues, Skiffle and the entire pop and rock scene of the 60s and beyond are primarily down to one man: Chris Barber” Record Collector

Unicorn Singers Choral Concert

Conductor Stephen Marshall

The 30-strong Unicorn Singers are an acapella group based in the beautiful Usk Valley with a great passion for early music.

Well known for their refreshing programme of exciting and often neglected repertoire, this concert showcases some of their most popular pieces - a tapestry of choral settings celebrating the glories of British music past and present with a novel and entertaining sequence of madrigals on the fortunes of love adding extra zest to the programme.

The rich legacy of music stretches from Tallis, Byrd and Purcell to Finzi and Taverner and contrasts with settings by Josquin, Monteverdi and Rachmaninov.
The choir sings at many local and national venues including Llandaff,
St. David's and Brecon Cathedrals, Tintern Abbey, Lamphey Palace and Dore
 Abbey near Hereford.

This is a welcome return visit to St Donats.
Expect a very special evening indeed.

Twentyfour04  Acoustic Showcase

The second of our acoustic music nights showcases the great musical talent on the increasingly popular acoustic scene.
Featuring:

   Peter Cronin

You’ll be tapping away to the rhythms Peter sets up with his thumb, hands or feet and be drawn to his lyrics - simple and effective personal statements overlaying a pulsing finger style guitar technique.

   Steve Collins

Originally from Portishead, Steve is one of our finest up and coming solo acoustic guitarists. He picked up the guitar after hearing Thomas Leeb’s, The Hard Can and wrote his own Star Gazing as a result.

   Grace Hartrey

Grace is already, at just fifteen, one of our most exciting young singer-songwriters - an impressive vocal talent compared with that of Beth Orton and a unique and accomplished guitarist, fusing her main inspiration, Newton Faulkner with a laidback song-writing style more akin to Jack Johnson, Nickel Creek or Paolo Nutini.

   The Beard Shop

This five piece collective from Llantwit specialises in their takes of pop and rock covers from David Gray and Ryan Adams to Elbow, The Magic Numbers and Pearl Jam via a multitude of musical diversions en route. Melding piano, acoustic guitar and percussion to unique vocal harmonies, you are assured a good night to be had wherever they play.

   New Druids

Founded by Kerry Sanson and Colum Regan, these singer songwriters recorded their first album in 1999 and were soon performing at venues and festivals in the UK, Ireland and America collaborating with many artists, -  folk musicians, dance music producers, storytellers, jazz and funk players, flamenco guitarists, drum ‘n’ bass groups, gypsy choirs, pop producers and theatre companies.

"Sensational Talent, they never fail to energise and enthuse an audience.  Indeed it's a habit of theirs to upstage all comers - but then again, they're so good they can't help it" Tunetown

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre on Tour presents

          The Comedy of Errors

Take one pair of estranged twins (both called Antipholus) and one pair of twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery and you have the chief ingredients for theatrical chaos.

Fast-paced, hilarious and seemingly irreverent, the young William Shakespeare explores themes in this comedy that recur again and again in his later work: mistaken identity, coincidence and the importance of family.
Performed on an Elizabethan-inspired stage, a small troupe of travelling players breathe new life into this delightfully anarchic play. Fast, furious and extremely funny, eight talented actors reinvent renaissance touring theatre for the 21st century with Shakespeare’s greatest farce.

Bring a picnic and enjoy it beforehand in the glorious surroundings!
All are welcome.
